One Small Step Forward

This drawing is not a unique idea, in fact it uses many of the same techniques as the drawing in my first post (just yesterday). What is different about this piece is the base layer. I am a scooter owner and enthusiast, so I used one of my scooter photographs I took with my iPhone on a recent trip to India as my starting point. I used Tiffen’s iPhone app, PhotoFX, to create an outline version of the photo in black and white. I used about 7 different filter layers to get it to the point I could use it to start my drawing. The last step in PhotoFX was the pencil drawing tool. See the process and final image below.
Once I finished prepping the photo on my phone, I copied the photos, pasted them in an e-mail and sent them to myself so that I could quickly get the full resolution image on my iPad. I started with the image in Qvick Sketch and trace over the outline of the scooter as a starting point.

I then used the eraser brush in Qvick Sketch to remove some of the stray shading dot patterns from the conversion in PhotoFX. once those were removed, I began the coloring/shading process.

The image seemed to still be missing something, so i added some gray to the bottom to represent a road and blue for the sky. Once i was happy with the general look, I saved the photo, closed out the app and opened TypeDrawing.

At the moment, I’m really into text treatments as part of the image, but i’m sure that will begin to fade with time. For now, it helped pull together the final image. It was missing elements of texture and shading, but the text overlaying the image added what I thought was needed to be happy with the final image. The word not only helps give it motion, but also begs the viewer to give it a try.
